Lokesh Kanagaraj’s most recent cinematic venture, “Leo,” pays homage to David Cronenberg’s 2005 film, “A History of Violence.” The Tamil movie presents a familiar narrative of a virtuous man grappling with a shadowy past. What sets it apart, however, is its protagonist, Parthiban, portrayed brilliantly by Thalapathy Vijay. Known for his adeptness at portraying intricate characters, Vijay’s performance shines and propels the movie to new heights.

Kanagaraj, recognized for directing action-packed films like “Kaithi” (2019) and “Vikram” (2022), takes a different approach with “Leo.” This time, the South Indian filmmaker infuses emotional depth into the storyline. The film encapsulates the quintessential elements of a crowd-pleaser, featuring a multifaceted lead character, exhilarating action sequences, catchy music, and a battle between forces of good and evil. Yet, it’s the enigmatic figure of Leo Das that keeps the audience riveted.

The story unfolds in the serene town of Theog, situated in Himachal Pradesh. The narrative introduces Parthiban, an animal rescuer and the proprietor of a café. He resides with his wife, Sathya (played by Trisha), their teenage son Siddharth (Mathew Thomas), and daughter Mathi (Iyal). Kanagaraj promptly establishes Parthiban as a heroic figure, showcasing his valor during a perilous encounter with a hyena. This incident, however, serves as a prelude to a heart-pounding action sequence in which Parthiban is compelled to wield a weapon to protect his daughter from a menacing gang.

Remarkably, the film hasn’t introduced its primary antagonists at this point, but the suspense surrounding Parthiban intensifies. As news of his bravery spreads, Kanagaraj introduces Arjun Sarja (Harold Das) and Sanjay Dutt (Anthony Das) – two notorious gangsters hailing from Telangana. They erroneously identify Parthiban as Leo Das, the estranged son of Anthony Das, and this marks the commencement of a riveting story replete with mystery, emotion, and action.

Upon learning that Leo Das is still alive, Harold and Anthony Das decide to meet him in person for confirmation. When they encounter Parthiban, Anthony Das becomes convinced that he has found his estranged son. Parthiban, however, vehemently denies being Leo. The situation becomes further convoluted when Parthiban is informed that he is married to Leo Das, a mass murderer. This prompts Sathya to investigate her husband’s past.

Simultaneously, Parthiban faces a grave predicament as Anthony Das kidnaps his son and threatens to harm him, much like he sacrificed his own daughter and Leo’s twin sister, Elisa (Madonna Sebastian). A confrontation ensues, resulting in Anthony Das’s demise, but Parthiban is still unable to locate his son. In the wake of his brother’s death, Harold Das offers to return Siddharth in exchange for Anthony’s body. Parthiban consents and embarks on a mission to rescue his son, leading to a brutal showdown with Harold Das and his henchmen. Despite the odds stacked against him, Parthiban emerges victorious. Just before exacting vengeance on Das and dismantling his criminal empire, he finally concedes that he is, indeed, Leo Das.

Is “Leo” Part of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Cinematic Universe?

In the epilogue, Parthiban receives an unexpected call from a mysterious individual who addresses him as Leo. This person informs him that merely destroying the family’s factory is insufficient and that they must collaborate to combat drug cartels in the nation. Intriguingly, Parthiban recognizes the caller’s voice and identifies him, with the backdrop of music from Kamal Haasan’s “Vikram” underscoring the scene. The post-credits sequence confirms that “Leo” is an integral component of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Cinematic Universe, hinting at the potential return of Thalapathy Vijay as Parthiban/Leo Das in future endeavors.
