Lokesh Kanagaraj’s most recent cinematic venture, “Leo,” pays homage to David Cronenberg’s 2005 film, “A History of Violence.” The Tamil movie presents a familiar narrative of a virtuous man grappling with a shadowy past. What sets it apart, however, is its protagonist, Parthiban, portrayed brilliantly by Thalapathy Vijay. Known for his adeptness at portraying intricate characters, Vijay’s performance shines and propels the movie to new heights.

Kanagaraj, recognized for directing action-packed films like “Kaithi” (2019) and “Vikram” (2022), takes a different approach with “Leo.” This time, the South Indian filmmaker infuses emotional depth into the storyline. The film encapsulates the quintessential elements of a crowd-pleaser, featuring a multifaceted lead character, exhilarating action sequences, catchy music, and a battle between forces of good and evil. Yet, it’s the enigmatic figure of Leo Das that keeps the audience riveted.
The story unfolds in the serene town of Theog, situated in Himachal Pradesh. The narrative introduces Parthiban, an animal rescuer and the proprietor of a café. He resides with his wife, Sathya (played by Trisha), their teenage son Siddharth (Mathew Thomas), and daughter Mathi (Iyal). Kanagaraj promptly establishes Parthiban as a heroic figure, showcasing his valor during a perilous encounter with a hyena. This incident, however, serves as a prelude to a heart-pounding action sequence in which Parthiban is compelled to wield a weapon to protect his daughter from a menacing gang.
Remarkably, the film hasn’t introduced its primary antagonists at this point, but the suspense surrounding Parthiban intensifies. As news of his bravery spreads, Kanagaraj introduces Arjun Sarja (Harold Das) and Sanjay Dutt (Anthony Das) – two notorious gangsters hailing from Telangana. They erroneously identify Parthiban as Leo Das, the estranged son of Anthony Das, and this marks the commencement of a riveting story replete with mystery, emotion, and action.
