Many Netflix users have long enjoyed the convenience of sharing accounts, but having one’s own Netflix subscription offers a different level of satisfaction. However, a common issue for many users has been the limited payment options available. Now, Netflix has addressed this by introducing alternative payment methods such as Unified Payments Interface (UPI), digital wallets, and direct carrier billing on their OTT app and website.

Netflix stated, “We’ve been working diligently to localize payment methods in APAC to better serve our members. Over the past year, we’ve seen significant growth in signups using alternative payment methods, with the number more than tripling from 2020 to 2021. This trend has continued into the current year, with a doubling of signups using such methods compared to the same period last year.”
This shift is driven by various factors. Across the region, there’s a growing preference for digital wallets, with projections indicating that they will constitute a significant portion of e-commerce transactions in APAC by 2025. Additionally, issues such as limited access to credit cards and recurring payment difficulties with debit cards have prompted Netflix to offer a wider range of payment options. Concerns over payment security also play a role, with many customers in APAC preferring to use mobile wallets linked to their phone numbers.
