The petition addressed the unauthorised use of his name in the title and requested an urgent stay on the film’s release, slated for June 14, 2024. The plea sought a permanent prohibition and restraining order against the producers of the movie, IndiaPride Advisory and Sanjay Singh, and writer-director Bablu Singh for employing Karan Johar’s name in the film’s title.
The plea was presented before a single bench of Justice RI Chagla on Wednesday, and the court agreed to hear the petition on Thursday (June 13). The Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani director emphasised that the film’s title directly referenced his name, breaching his personal rights, and rights to publicity and privacy.
Karan stated that by using his ‘brand name’ without authorisation, the filmmakers are exploiting his goodwill and reputation. The legal action indicated that the film is set to release on June 14 and its promotional assets, such as the trailer and posters, have been disseminated in public areas and on social platforms. Johar stressed that the promotional materials were causing substantial detriment and injury to his goodwill and reputation. The lawsuit asserted that the trailers and posters had caused and were perpetuating irreparable injury and harm to the goodwill and reputation of Johar. It further mentioned that the release of the movie with the title including his brand name ‘Karan Johar,’ either entirely or partially, would result in irreparable injury and harm to the goodwill and reputation he had developed after investing significant amounts of time, effort, and money.
