Plot Summary
Vasantha Balan’s “Jail” is a social drama dealing with the issues of development or gentrification, which influenced the underprivileged. The film is about a man named Karuna, played by GV Prakash Kumar, and his friends who are living in the housing board on the outskirt of the city. Starting from the very problem of harassment by the police as a routine procedure, Karuna undergoes various problems in life that impacts him hugely.
The story begins with a voice-over introduction of the main characters; it provides just an initial setup, and in most cases, almost all other roles completely lack depth. This lessens the emotional reach toward the audience compared to Vasantha Balan’s earlier effort, “Angadi Theru,” where the audience still remembers it because of the well-built characters.
Performances
From being irritating, G.V. Prakash Kumar’s act turns out to be empathetic toward the end. Abarnathi, too, does well, but then Pasanga Pandi steals the show with his act, which reminds one of the innocent romance of “Angadi Theru.”

Overall Impressions
“Jail” deals with a relevant subject and falters in bringing out the desired impact. There is a weak emotional core, and then, of course, some staring glitches in the screenplay. But the technical areas and the performances partly compensate for it. If only the writing had some more depth and their research was better, “Jail” would have been an important film in Indian cinema.
Verdict
“Jail” is a watchable drama, primarily for GV Prakash Kumar’s performance and the critical message it seeks to deliver.
