Dangal is a film based on the biography of Mahavir Singh and his two daughters, Geeta and Babita Phogat. The movie traces the motivational journey of a father who trains his daughters to become world-class wrestlers.

Nitesh Tiwari was born on May 22, 1973. Tiwari is an Indian film director, scriptwriter, and lyricist known for his works in Bollywood. He started as a co-director in Chillar Party (2011) which won the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film. He also directed the supernatural political thriller Bhoothnath Returns (2014). Tiwari wrote and directed Dangal (2016), which was also shown at the Beijing International Cinema Festival and the second BRICS gathering in 2017.

The soundtrack in the movie is created by Pritam, with lyrics penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya in Hindi, Rajesh Malarvannan in Tamil, and Rajshri Sudhakar in Telugu. Daler Mehndi performed the film’s title track. The song “Dhaakad” was sung by rapper Raftaar and became famous, receiving 12 million views in three days. The soundtrack of the album was launched on November 23, 2016, in Hindi and November 26, 2016, in Tamil and Telugu, under the Zee Music Company label.

Box office
Dangal grossed ₹716 crore after its initial run. It includes ₹511 crore in India and ₹205 crore overseas. After it collected a nett of ₹345 crore over its third weekend from release, it surpassed the record held by PK for the top-grossing Indian film.
