Early Life and Background
Born as Sweety Shetty on November 7, 1981, in Mangalore, Karnataka, Anushka hails from a Tulu-speaking family. She is the daughter of A.N. Vittal Shetty and Prafulla Shetty. She also has two elder brothers, Sai Ramesh Shetty, who is a cosmetic surgeon, and Gunaranjan Shetty, a businessman.
She completed her schooling in Mangalore and did her BCA from Mount Carmel College, Bengaluru. Though she was academically inclined, it was her passion for yoga that made her train under Bharat Thakur, a renowned yoga guru, which later opened doors to the entertainment industry.
Entry into the Film Industry
Her entry into films happened purely by accident when E. Nivas spotted her at a yoga session and suggested that she be sent to director Puri Jagannadh. Anushka made her acting debut in the 2005 Telugu film “Super”, where she starred alongside Nagarjuna. The movie didn’t work well, but there was enough potential about Anushka to draw attention from both the filmmakers and the audience.
The second film she did, “Mahanandi” in 2005, actually made her establish herself as a promising young star. Yet it was “Vikramarkudu” (2006), once again opposite Ravi Teja, which became her landmark film that fetched her popularity at a greater scale.
Anushka’s career took off meteorically with her portrayal of strong and memorable characters. She did films like “Arundhati” in 2009, which proved her acting prowess. In this supernatural thriller, Anushka played dual roles, earning her both critical acclaim and commercial success.
Yet another landmark was “Vedam” (2010), in which she enacted the role of Saroja, a prostitute. She garnered immense acclaim in the film for her versatility in playing challenging roles.
