What Happens When Rana Returns from the Forest?

Rana disappears during a forest hike with her friend, Janu. After seven days of fruitless searching, her family plans a funeral but struggles to agree on the official date of her death. Her aunts, guided by superstitions, blame Dini (Rana’s mother) for her “inauspicious” birth and marriage to their brother, Banyu, which they believe brought misfortune. Rana vanished on Dini’s birthday, but when Rana reappeared on the seventh day, doubts arose about her identity. While Dini supports her, others believe that she is possessed. Banyu suggests conducting medical tests to ascertain this, but locals think she is an evil spirit.

Is Rana Possessed?
Only the doubters around her seem to be perturbed by Rana’s presence. Rumours abound, yet no one gets hurt. Tari, Rana’s sister, initially fears her and eventually finds comfort in her presence. On the other hand, Rana subjects the aunts to terrifying situations — maggots in her hair and ghosts scaring them. They too demand a purification ceremony. When the doctor does check on Rana and finds maggots in her mouth, he walks out. The villagers grow more suspicious. Dini does not want a purification ceremony. She believes in her daughter.
Janu informs Rana that perhaps her body is still in the forest, thus refuting the person at home as being her.

During the ritual, Rana experiences hallucinations of spirits surrounding her. Simultaneously, Tari and Janu find Rana’s body disfigured in the forest. Bringing back her remains, they confirm that Primbon had been telling the truth all along. A recording from Rana reveals she ventured into the forest to gather a gift for her mother, attempting to prove Dini’s birthday wasn’t cursed.

Superstition vs. Reality
Many questions are left open in the movie. Was it a case of Rana returning as a spirit or one of trauma and mass hysteria because of superstition? Perhaps Rana’s behaviour is the aftermath of what happened to her, and the villagers’ beliefs fed into their fears. Janu might be paranoid about having left Rana too. The last scene is that of either a supernatural encounter or blind faith leading to a tragic end.
