Silloo Bode, who later in life became Silloo Manekshaw at her marriage, is known for being the dignified and graceful wife of India’s first Field Marshal, Sam Manekshaw. Early Life and Background

Silloo Bode was born in Amritsar at the turn of the 20th century. She was brought up in a respected Parsi family, which had a tradition of high value on education and culture. After completing her school, which was at a young age, she also went to Elphinstone College in Bombay, an institution that mentored many a personality. Also, later she attended Sir J. J. School of Art, where she pursued her interest in painting, which in turn gave her a great appreciation for creativity and self-expression.

Marriage to Sam Manekshaw

In 1937, during a visit to Lahore, Silloo met a young and charming Indian Army officer, Sam Manekshaw. They connected from the start, and after a while, the two wed on 22 April 1939 in Bombay. The marriage of these two, which was very different yet complementary, was between Sam, with his structured military life and Silloo, with her tranquil and reflective nature.

The couple had 2 girls, Sherry and Maja. As Sam climbed the career ladder and at times was sent to different military bases, Silloo took it in stride. She ran the home, made sure her children had a stable environment and also got involved in the social and welfare groups for military families. Her presence was a rock for her husband through many a wartime issue.

Personality and Interests

Silloo was a woman of grace, modesty and culture. She was a dedicated reader, enjoyed painting, and was very much into discipline and values. She did yoga, went for daily walks, and was a mainstay at social gatherings. Also, a director of small theatre plays in military institutions, which she did very well in terms of creativity and leadership. Though married to a very decorated military officer, she stayed humbled and grounded, which ensured that her family held onto their roots.

Death

Silloo Bode left us on 13 February 2001 in Tamil Nadu. At that time, she was 90 years old. Her death put to an end a very remarkable life which she lived with dignity, resilience and grace. To this day, she is remembered very fondly by her family and the few who knew her well.
