The Kanishk Varma directorial is about the trial of a serial murderer, who strangles young girls to death and cuts off their feet to preserve them as souvenirs. Though the story of the movie by &Pictures holds the audience’s attention, certain drawbacks were pointed out by netizens, mainly about the ending of Footfairy, which leaves one hanging. If you were equally bewildered by the psychological thriller’s ending, look below for the explanation for the Footfairy movie’s ending.

Who is the killer in the Footfairy movie?

Footfairy is a psychological thriller that is Kanishk Varma’s directorial debut. The film offers an open-ended mystery that leaves viewers with even more gruesome possibilities about who could be the killer in Footfairy. The story centers on Vivaan Deshmukh (Gulshan Devaiah), depicted as the Sherlock Holmes of the CBI, as he sets out on a mission to take down a psychopathic murderer. As indicated by the title of the &Pictures movie, the murderer in this film is known as ‘Footfairy’. The above-cited title is given to the murderer because he is obsessed with cutting off the victim’s legs and taking them away. However, because of the growing pressure caused by the growing number of murders, Vivaan targets Joshua Matthews (Kunal Roy Kapur). Joshua’s strange behavior and mysterious vanishing acts make him the prime suspect in Footfairy. But what Deshmukh requires is concrete evidence to arrest the suspect.

Towards the end of Footfairy, after another murder, Vivaan decides to break into Joshua’s house and mercilessly beat him till he admits to his crime, while his department is waiting for his DNA test results. As a result, Vivaan decides to shoot him, but his colleague stops him and tells him that the test results are ‘inconclusive,’ which means Joshua is not the killer.

Later, the film cuts forward 7 years and shows Devika taking care of her daughter with Vivaan. In contrast, Vivaan goes to Mumbai to attend a funeral and runs into his colleague Harsh. It is revealed that Vivaan relocated to Bangalore after being prompted to quit his job since Joshua had pressed charges of defamation against him.

Following a goodbye with Harsh, Vivaan visits the same site of the crime, where a boy tells him that there was another man who had visited there too and spoken of the red suitcase he had left years ago.

On being asked about where the stranger had gone, the boy points towards the railway lines as the camera moves forward, leaving the ending open to interpretation. Apart from highlighting the serial killer’s ambiguous fixation, Footfairy also shows the CBI officer’s fixation on catching the criminal.
