Mizoram in the east of India is a state that has a great cultural heritage and a variety of ethnic groups. Traditional Dress of Mizo Men
Mizo men’s traditional wear is practical to the region’s topography and climate. They wear handwoven fabrics and simple accessories which are also usually made of local materials.
Pundam – The Main Attire
The Phanum is a very common traditional garment that Mizo men wear. It is a large rectangular piece of cloth which is usually black with red and white stripes. It is wrapped around the body and thrown over the shoulders. In the past the Pundam was not only a piece of clothing but also very cultural, used in ceremonies and as a shroud at funerals.
Ngotekherh and Shirt
Along with the Puandum men put on what is called Ngotekherh which is a piece of woven fabric that they tie at the waist in a wraparound style. Today this is often seen with a white or checked shirt. This shirt and cloth set is a mix of the traditional and the contemporary.
Headgear and Accessories
During festivals which include Chapchar Kut Mizo men put on traditional turbans and headbands made of bamboo which in turn are decorated with feathers. For footwear, they wear simple sandals or handmade slippers of cane or leather.

Mizo women wear a large variety of traditional clothes which are very detailed in design and meaning. They also wear handwoven pieces that use natural dyes and are either made of cotton or silk threads which are put through the traditional loom with great skill.
Puan – The Signature Attire
The most popular element of a Mizo woman’s wardrobe is the Puan. Made of handwoven fabric which is usually in bright colors with detailed patterns the Puans are tied very high at the waist and flow down to the ankles. What one sees is a variety of Puans each fit for different occasions.
Some famous types include:
- Puanchei For festivals and dances these are worn which come in bright red, white, and black with complex designs.
- Mrs. Rawn A basic everyday plan with more simpler design.
- Kawrchei is A blouse which is worn with Puanchei, typically in white with embroidery at the neck and sleeves.
Upper Garments and Ornaments
At the top women wear the Kawrchei which is a close-fitting blouse of cotton or silk. We see embroidery and the use of colorful threads which decorate this piece to complement the puan. Also at cultural events and weddings, women put on silver jewelry which includes bangles, earrings, and traditional necklaces.
Cultural Significance and Modern Influence
Traditional clothing in Mizoram is a display of identity, community, and celebration. Garments are usually hand-made at home or in local cooperatives which in turn preserve and pass down through the generations very old weaving methods.
Over time Western clothing has become a part of our everyday wear, which we see more of in the younger generation. But during festivals like Chapchar Kut, Pawl Kut, and Mim Kut it is the traditional clothes that stand out. Also, schools and cultural groups play a role in the promotion of these attires to preserve Mizo culture.

Today we see modern fashion influences but the people of Mizoram still do what they can to preserve their traditional wear.
